About this place
Drizzling kuromitsu brown sugar syrup over toasted soybean flour is one of the distinct pleasures of visiting a traditional Japanese sweets salon. At Hokusai Sabō in Kamezawa, Sumida Ward, the signature Torori Warabimochi balances its namesake melt-in-the-mouth softness with a pleasant gentle chew, blending cleanly with fragrant kinako and sweet syrup. Paired with vibrant green Uji matcha or the house matcha au lait, the drink's clean, mild bitterness rounds out the dessert's lingering sweetness.
For a bowl layered with contrasting textures, the Sabō Tokusei Anmitsu is a satisfying centerpiece. Plump, well-defined Tanba Dainagon red beans are arranged alongside firm agar cubes, chewy shiratama dango, soft gyuhi mochi, seasonal fruits, crisp monaka wafers, and a scoop of ice cream. Spooning over dark syrup a little at a time while moving between cold ice cream and nutty wafer shells makes for an indulgent afternoon pause.
Alongside confectionery, the tearoom maintains a grounded savory menu. Freshly steamed iron-pot rice dishes include red sea bream with house miso kamameshi as well as northern salmon and salmon roe kamameshi. These sit alongside thoughtfully prepared small plates such as dashi-rolled omelets and crisp tatsuta-fried stewed taro. With high ceilings and warm wooden accents, the relaxed space accommodates everything from a full meal to a quiet sweet treat.
